interweaving contemporaneous story lines, this is Altman's masterpiece, for sure. If there is such a thing as a 1, 2-punch in filmmaking, THE PLAYER, and this one, are Altman's. as with most of his ensembles, the list of stars just keeps going and going. Madeiline Stowe, as Tim Robbins' long-suffering wife, deserves a mention, here. so does Chris Penn. as does the actor who later played as Iron Man. as does Lili Taylor, of DOGFIGHT fame. Lili Tomlin, Tom Waites, Huey Lewis of THE NEWS, Matthew Modine. as I said, the list just keeps going. Actors seem to thrive under Robert's direction, in a way quite unlike the way actors performed under his mentor, Alfred Hitchcock. But the story rules here. Taken from several stories by Raymond Carver, but not exactly: they have been given the Altman treatment.
