As with all of Cassandra Clare's books, one of the main strengths of this one is how deftly it balances the relationships in its pages. She goes into such depth character-wise while still not sacrificing plot depth or writing quality.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: ouch :')

James Herondale and Cordelia Carstairs, now Herondale, are officially married - but Cordelia knows it is simply a marriage for show, to save both of their reputations. She's forced herself to be content with the shade of what she truly wants, but she knows James is in love with Grace Blackthorn. When a string of killings ensues in London, however, Cordelia has bigger problems: someone appears to be killing Nephilim, using mundane methods. Together with the Merry Thieves, they must solve the mystery of the murders, before someone they all love becomes the victim.

As with all of Cassandra Clare's books, one of the main strengths of this one is how deftly it balances the relationships in its pages. I just care so much about both Cordelia and James and I want what's best for both of them so badly, and every time that they don't communicate or take things the wrong way I both want to throttle them and hug them. And in this book, Lucie and Jesse Blackthorn tugged on the ol' heart strings as well - though Grace's involvement in everything made me want to pull my hair out.

I also love how CC keeps coming up with plots that I can't predict. Here, there are killings happening, killings of Shadowhunters, but I was constantly trying to put the pieces together and couldn't come up with anything until it was revealed. I love having to go along for the ride like that with a book, and I can always count on these ones for that. And how she balances all the perspectives, how every character is struggling with something and how it all comes together and how everything affects everything else, just consistently blows my mind.

I just love this world so much. I love how in-depth CC goes with the dynamics amongst the characters while still not sacrificing plot depth or writing quality. I need book three, like, yesterday.

Despite everything, despite Cortana, Cordelia felt a wash of happiness. It wasn’t just that she loved James, she thought. She loved his friends, loved his family, loved their shared plans, loved Lucie being her sister. She would have felt guilty being so happy, had it not been for the hollow place in the deepest part of her heart - the small, echoing space that held the knowledge that all this was temporary.
