Tricia Levenseller, author of Daughter of the Pirate King, is back with an epic YA tale of ambition and love in The Shadows Between Us... “They've never found the body of the first and only boy who broke my heart. And they never will.” Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power: 1) Woo the Shadow King. 2) Marry him. 3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself. No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King's power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she's going to do everything within her power to get it. But Alessandra's not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen-all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen? “Tricia Levenseller's latest, The Shadows Between Us, is a decadent and wickedly addictive fantasy, full of schemes and court intrigue, and delightful descriptions of food, which I am always a fan of.” -Kendare Blake, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Three Dark Crowns series

I love this protagonist. She is the embodiment of Slytherin values. She doesn't just talk the talk either she walks the walk. She is willing to do a lot to get where she wants to be and she has the brains to get past all obstacles. Because of this I loved seeing what she WASN'T willing to do.

I was worried that this wouldn't be a one of because there was not a lot of audio left (audiobook) and things were still unresolved. Needless to say this is a familiar concern to a lot of avid readers. Fortunately this book manages to resolve everything in one spectacular climax.

I also loved the shadow king because he represents the book and the authors stance on outdated concepts of sexuality. He doesn't care that she has had previous sexual partners. He has so why should he expect any different from her? Not necessarily related to sexuality but he also doesn't care that she killed a man. He figures the man deserved it. This forgiveness I'm not sure is quite so smart of him.

There was a little bit of biphobia in the book I thought where a character said they wouldn't date a bi-person though obviously the book includes a bi-person who if I'm remembering correctly is/was in a gay presenting relationship so I'm not entirely sure what is going on there and whether it is just the characters limited view.

I like that this book also has an excellent portrayal of female friendship where the women support one another. Though one of the opposite-sex friendships becomes sexual this is mutual on both sides and ends... interestingly.

It was such a good book with back to back plot twists that kept u captivated and wondering what was gonna happen on the next page!!!

This isn't a great book, but I immensely enjoyed reading it. It's definitely good to read if you liked the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas, featuring a dark romance, devious characters, and a slew of extravagantly made clothes. While ordinarily I'm not one for overdramatic plotlines, this book was exactly the right read at the right time for me.

A fun read... a bit of scheming, gossips, mystery, and romance. I enjoyed it.

I wanted so badly to give this book 5 stars, but there were just a few things keeping me from doing so.
I am, personally, not a huge fan of first person present tense prose, but this author had me hooked on page one.
A girl who killed a man for love? Hot damn.
As the story went on, however, I found every plot twist was predictable. Not only that, but everything happens SO FAST (expected with a 300 page book, which is precisely why I think it would’ve paid to have been longer), as there are minimal details, and the world building is mediocre at best. I had a struggle envisioning what the author was trying to tell. I found myself asking, “What? How?” many times, and I can’t say why, but I’ll just say that some impossible things happen that I suppose are forgiven since it’s a fantasy novel, but nonetheless, I was puzzled.
I do, however, love the main character, Alessandra, and her attitude towards everything in the world. I did also enjoy the Shadow King. I don’t want to throw any spoilers out there, but I definitely expected a lot more between the two of them.
Overall, I did enjoy the full concept of the story, it was decently executed, just too fast and too poorly.
