"Hardbitten former FBI agent Brigid Quinn is back--and this time, she's on home turf. Brigid has been forced to return to her Florida hometown to answer two very different calls for help. One is from her mother, summoning her to her ill father's hospital bed; the other is from Laura Coleman, the protégé/colleague who helped her catch the Highway 66 serial killer. Still mentally recovering from their ordeal, Coleman is tirelessly pursuing the acquittal of Marcus Creighton, a death row inmate convicted of murdering his wife and three children. Initially convinced of Creighton's guilt, Brigid starts to reconsider as new evidence comes to light. But the clock is ticking; Creighton's execution is due to happen in a few days. If Creighton is indeed innocent, can they really save him--and draw out the real killer? As if this weren't enough, Brigid must also re-examine childhood truths to which she's clung for years. Just how sick is her father? Will she and her brother Todd ever see eye-to-eye, especially after her revelations about his daughter? And what long-held secret is her mother finally poised to reveal? With so much at stake, Brigid has to draw on every bit of skill, craft, and grit she possesses--especially when danger may be closer to home than she realizes..."-- Provided by publisher.

4 - 4 1/2 star read. This is the 3rd book in Masterman's excellent Brigid Quinn series. I really like this series and the lead character. She's an ex-FBI agent who has seen and done things that most people cannot imagine. In this book, Brigid has come home as her father is very ill in hospital. While she is back there, her old FBI friend Laura Coleman gets her involved in a case of a man on death row who she believes has been wrongly accused of killing his wife and children. As they start to investigate, time gets shorter as his execution date is brought forward. Brigid becomes convinced that he may well be innocent. This was a well written thriller that had twists and turns that were unexpected and a great storyline with strong characters. I really enjoy this series. A very good read.

What a fantastic twisty mystery read, loved this book, could not put it down and so i read it in 2 days! The main character is flawed but you like her, despite her flaws, the author has written another great book about our favourite FBI retiree! Great book!

This was a read for a Mystery Book group - and everyone seemed to enjoy it. The detective is a different voice then we usually hear from and the book is a quick read. I thought the dual story lines were interesting and made the book very realistic. I will try another installment before making a decision to continue with the series or not.

So glad we have this local author. I can't wait for the next Quinn book. Love her stories. Easy to read, though tough stuff in spots, Becky gets it right.

This book is an average to sub average effort, that I found to be engaging at times but never compelling. The writing style is a bit lazy, certainly never too descriptive and the two story lines failed to propel, or, accentuate the story, nor my enjoyment.

The dual plot lines (ailing father, and death-row execution mystery) do not weave together as elegantly or with the complementarity that one might hope, but Masterman is still a master storyteller and Brigid Quinn a refreshing presence in the genre.

Loved the original Brigid Quinn novel... this one was quite disappointing. It lacked in many things, maybe especially the original southwest setting... also 'family angst' is available in too many books- this story did not benefit from the ailing father at all!

After 65 pages gave up--too wordy. Couldn't figure out what all the fuss is about this book.
