The chilling new suspense novel from the author of Brotherhood in Death. After a party in New York, Lieutenant Eve Dallas rides home with her billionaire husband, Roarke, happy to be done with cocktails and small talk. After another party, not far away, a woman retires to her bedroom with her husband--and walks into a brutal nightmare. Their paths are about to collide... When the young woman--dazed, naked, and bloody--wanders in front of their car, Roarke slams on the brakes just in time, and Eve, still in glittering gown and heels, springs into action. It's been a long night for the tired homicide cop, and it's far from over. Daphne Strazza is rushed to the ER, but it's too late for Dr. Anthony Strazza. A brilliant orthopedic surgeon, he now lies dead amid the wreckage of his obsessively organized town house, his three safes opened and emptied. Daphne would be a valuable witness, but in her terror and shock the only description of the perp she can offer is repeatedly calling him "the devil"... While it emerges that Dr. Strazza was cold, controlling, and widely disliked--and that he treated Daphne like a trophy wife--this is one case where the evidence doesn't point to the spouse as the first suspect. So Eve and her team must get started on the legwork, interviewing everyone from dinner-party guests to professional colleagues to caterers, in a desperate race to answer some crucial questions: What does the devil look like? And where will he show up next?"-- Provided by publisher.

This was a truly frightening tale of a violent, sociopath, who revels in humiliating his victims. All the victims are upper crust high profile couples. All the wives are gorgeous and all seem like perfect couples. This serial rapist/burglar/killer seethes with rage when he sees these beautiful women with those men who are so beneath him. Who do those beauties think they are?? Passing him over for those 'losers' they have married. His driving force is revenge for the perceived slights and to show that HE is the one they all want; HE is the one who will satisfy their sexual needs. HE is the ultimate god, lover, purveyor of retribution and revenge in the most sadistic and horrific way possible.
The story of the NYPD investigation into the rapes & murders is a close narrative of the wearying, wrenching work of trying to find links, evidence and the victory of deduction of who the criminal is and the satisfaction of bringing him to justice. The takedown of the killer was so exciting and well written, it felt like the reader was watching in 'real time'.
The victim's stories of their attacks was heart wrenching. But the most gruesome part of the story is when the criminal is gloating and boasting about the brutal details of his 'conquests' .
This narrative is not for the faint hearted.

This was yet another example of how amazing Nora is at giving you a visual of each and every character she writes. Each step of this story showed how arrogant and cruel the villain was in this story.

The way that he acted showed how he disdained everyone, including his own family. For me it was no surprise that he chose to brag about everything he had done and the lives that he had destroyed.

After all he had already gotten away with committing terrible crimes in the past. He believed that he was beyond the law and that his wealth would mean that he would have what amounted to a slap on the shoulder.

The fact that Nora is able to see what is happening in our own time and connect it to the future in her books is one of the reasons that she will always be one of the top writers of our time.

better than the last few. Well done on the victim development. Some twists.

Enjoyable quick read, spoiled only by the villain acting inexplicably after his arrest. Having been so impeccably thorough in his preparation for and commission of the various crimes, it isn't believable for him to act so stupidly, bragging about his crimes, refusing a lawyer, and after a bit of bluster, blurting the whole business out on the record. This behavior simply doesn't fit with the character Roberts built for him throughout the book.

One of the more interesting in the series. Unusual weakness in that her bad guy is too stereotyped to be believable or interesting. The victims end up being the main points of interest along with the usual hot sex and cold logic.

I really enjoy reading these books. The characters grow with each book showing new sides of each and how the cases affects them. I could not put this book down for long and finished it in a weekend. Usually, I have a suspicion who the guilty parties are before the end, this time I knew before it was revealed. After the case was solved and the story was wrapping up the author revealed there was one last thing.
