Painter Mark Rothko is best known for imposing canvasses that eschew representation in favor of pure color and texture, using them to express fundamental human emotions. In THE SILENCE OF MARK ROTHKO, we visit Rothko's studio at 22 Bowery in New York. The film includes thoughtful, engaging commentary from experts including Rothko's biographer, Annie Cohen-Solal, and conservator Carol Mancusi-Ungaro.

The work of Mark Rothko is not for everyone. It is not easy to define, as demonstrated in this film. What disappointed me was that the filmmaker asked the monetary value of the work. This is a cheap shot when addressing the emotional value of the work. The kind of person who has to know what the monetary worth of a painting in order to appreciate it should not be the audience for Rothko's work.

A ho-hum documentary about an artist I'd never heard of, who did work I couldn't care less about. The film didn't give me any reason to care, nor any reason to learn more. How did it possibly earn 4 stars?
