In the spring of 2016 a wildfire in northeastern Alberta grew so quickly it overtook the community of Fort McMurray. Almost 90,000 people were told to leave the town immediately. The fire consumed 590,000 hectares and destroyed 2,400 homes before being tamed. Firefighters nicknamed it ​"​The Beast.​" ​ It became the largest and costliest wildfire in the province’s history.​
