Swing Sideways is a wonderful novel, one of those you keep remembering all your life. There's laughter, chickens, a hurt dog needing help, and the search for two lost ponies that ties together somehow with the book's two heroines, Annie and California, finding the secret to bringing California's mother and grandfather back together again. There is sorrow and grief with the revelation of a final, heartbreaking secret, but even that sadness cannot erase hopes and dreams.

I had high hopes for Swing Sideways, and was ultimately left disappointed. I appreciated the portrayal of Annie's anxiety in a very real and personal way. She consistently berates herself for not being a good friend as California demands more and more of her, and I expected this to be a starting point for Annie to realize she's a perfectly fine friend or for California to see the truth and apologize. Instead, we get a stupid, predictable, unsatisfying plot twist that robs everyone of the responsibility to grow and develop as a person.
