Stella Darnell cannot shake her father's legacy. A year after his death, she still visits his house every day. Now she has discovered what looks like an unsolved case in his darkroom: a folder of unlabelled photographs of deserted streets. But why did her father - a Detective Chief Superintendent and a stickler for order - never file them at the station? The oldest photo dates back to 1966. To a day when a young girl, just ten years old, is taking her little brother home from school in time for tea. That afternoon, as the Moors Murderers are sent to prison for life, Mary witnesses something horrible that will haunt her forever.

This was a mystery I couldn't put down. Thomson's device of shifting between childhood events and the present day really gets hold of the reader. Good character development and memorable characters, especially Jack, who to me was fascinating rather than confusing. It is true this is not a book for someone who is not comfortable with many characters and who is not comfortable taking characters for what they are without applying diagnoses to them. To me, that's part of what made this book stand out, as well as the beautiful writing and how Thomson brings London to life.

The copy I read did not have problems with misprints of the year, or more than the usual number of typos (ie, very few).

Strange, confusing. Awkward conversations and so much detail overload. Lots of typos (word orders wrong--maybe because it was printed in Germany). Dates of records show 2012, 1912, 1012 even though story is set between 1966 and 2012. Maybe a person needs to read her other books first to find out if Jack is really as strange as he seems and If Stella has OCD. Intrigued enough to try her other stories.
